Haida Clear Night rear filter

Haida’s Clear-Night Filter (for Sigma 14-24mm F/2.8 DG DN Art for Sony E and Leica L, Sony FE 12-24mm F4 G, Sony FE 12-24mm F2.8 GM Lens) is designed to reduce the appearance of light pollution in photos or videos that include the night sky and minimize illumination from artificial light sources. This effect can be achieved when the filter is used on a digital camera system with a daylight white balance setting.

Light pollution occurs in areas of the night sky that are above or near concentrated and intense sources of artificial light, such as cities. These sources may include streetlights, outdoor and indoor lighting of commercial or residential buildings, lighting of sports and entertainment facilities, and brightly lit advertisements such as billboards. Together, they can cause a type of light pollution known as skyglow, where individual stars, the Milky Way, and other astronomical objects in the night sky are obscured. In addition, it can be difficult to distinguish individual artificial light sources that are clustered close together. Light pollution from these “cluttered” sources can be distracting in a photograph and can resemble overexposed regions of glow.

The Haida Clear-Night filter is a rear-mounted filter that can improve the results of nighttime images by absorbing yellow light from sodium vapour lamps, a common light source in urban areas. By preventing the dominant wavelengths of light associated with the colour of these lamps from being detected, the filter enhances the visibility of astronomical objects. It ensures that the places where artificial light sources appear are more clearly defined, with less glow and better contrast.
